Happy National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM)! This NDEAM Spotlight shines on Cynthia! 🌟

Cynthia is a Sherando High School alum & Project SEARCH graduate who had an interest in food services but wasn’t sure how to take the next step. Cynthia was told about Project SEARCH during her senior year of high school and shortly after she was enrolled.

Cynthia went through three exploratory internships during her time in Project SEARCH and her interest was piqued with the nutrition internship. She knew from the start that was her future. As Cynthia put it, it gave her “a rush of excitement” that she still feels today working in dining services. Thanks to the partnership between the local school systems, Valley Health and NW Works, students like Cynthia can unlock their passions and have a greater chance at success in the workplace through a low-risk transition program.

Cynthia’s background with food services began with Project SEARCH, shortly followed by Commonwealth Senior Living who hired her after her graduation. At Commonwealth Senior Living Cynthia worked as a dietary associate transporting food to residents’ rooms, disposing of leftovers, cleaning tableware, and at times, preparing food. Recently, she’s transitioned to a new role at Schaeffer’s BBQ in Middletown, VA, where she is building on her intentions to become a chef. Through bussing tables, portioning food, and some serving duties, Cynthia is learning how these tasks serve as building blocks for her passion.

Cynthia summarized her satisfaction with the Project SEARCH program, declaring, “Because of Project SEARCH I have an amazing job.” Thanks to all involved with Project SEARCH, Cynthia has gained independence through the dignity of work and she feels empowered & proud of what she’s accomplished.
